Ahhh, now I understand you.

That absolutely makes sense. Well, as much as living in a rainbow can, at least! I would say that you're referencing an experience that the rest of us share; thus your emotions are still firmly rooted in reality. You are simply composing an ode or a homage--said like Martin Blower, of course--to the beauty of the sunset.

Perhaps you are indeed removing it from its context. So be it. You're still creating authentic art that others can relate to in a very real way.

Notice, also, that I don't mean to belittle or downplay the importance of surreal or fantastical art. I simply think that as we grow older and more mature, we begin to see the value of real life more clearly, whereas before we saw it only as primarily utilitarian or mundane.

ladida. apparently i am terrible at explaining, as evidenced by this comment and countless others and my english presentation today (begh). i will try using a "concrete" example, maybe i can articulate myself better then.

let's say you see a beautiful sunset (ew). you feel feelings of soaring desire to actually be part of the sunset (hm, questionable...). but you can't, so instead you compose a piece of music that expresses the emotion of awe/desire. that way you get to express your emotion out of context, more truly than if you were to say "that sunset is beautiful and i wish i could make a house in it."
does that make sense?

okay, what about this: do you think it's possible to express an emotion that's usually only attached to an experience OUT of context? because i just saw a show that did that, and it was incredible. so maybe the theoretical can be taken out of the practical and re-defined in another way. is that possible through art, maybe? (i don't know how this fits in to what cal seerveld says - ever read Rainbows for a Fallen World?)

hey...I've seen you around the TD site a lot and I've read your stuff (yes you are extraordinary :) ) on and off through the years, and so I was thrilled to find this blog.

This quote from above really hit home...

to find christ in the mundane reality, and show the beauty in it still. a worthy effort to seek to do.

there's more real to the fantasy than we give it credit for though. not just in it's symbolism...

but i think you know that.

Gaiman does this balance that somehow works so perfectly. like in Neverwhere and in American Gods, and in Anansi Boys. You'd learn alot reading those books.

Good thoughts, sir. For most of the last.. what, 6 years?.. since I started writing, I've written fantasy. I never really thought about what it might mean before.
